Weather Allows Farmers to Get Ahead in the Fields

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020 -- 9:35 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The month of May wrapped up with warm and humid conditions, which helped with crop emergence and even allowed for some hay cutting in many parts of the Badger State.

However, the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service reports that fieldwork progress stalled later in the week because of heavy rain. Monday's weekly crop report noted that topsoil moisture levels was rated two percent short, 75 percent adequate and 23 percent surplus. The spring tillage was nearly all complete, which is about two weeks better than average. About 94 percent of the corn crop is now in the ground, 25 days ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of normal. Emergence is also about three weeks ahead of schedule at 73 percent.

Soybean planting was 88 percent complete, 23 days further along than in 2019 and 11 days ahead of the five-year average. Over half of the beans have now sprouted and most are looking good to excellent. With 95 percent of the oats seeded, that crop was 85 percent emerged throughout the state. Reporters say the winter wheat was 11 percent headed, which is four days ahead of last year, but slightly behind usual for late May.
