JACKSON COUNTY DEPUTY COMMENDED FOR DIFFUSING DANGEROUS SITUATION

Monday, August 29th, 2005 -- 11:07 AM

A Jackson County Sheriff?s deputy is being praised for his handling of a potentially volatile situation involving a man with a loaded rifle.

The incident happened on Saturday near Hixton. The daughter of a man reportedly armed with a rifle made a call to the Sheriff?s Department. She said she didn?t know what her father might do with the rifle.

Deputy Scott Bowe was the first on the scene. He observed a man holding what appeared to be a rifle and another person trying to restrain the man.

Bowe rapidly approached the man, ordering him at gunpoint to drop the weapon. The man refused and told the deputy to shoot him. Bowe was able to grab the gun and wrestle it away while hitting the man with a baton.

With the help of the other citizen, they were able to handcuff him and take him into custody.

It was later learned that the weapon was a loaded 30.06 bolt-action rifle equipped with a scope. More ammunition was also found. The man was apparently trying to take his own life.
