Spring Planting in Wisconsin Off to a Great Start

Tuesday, May 5th, 2020 -- 8:39 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The spring of 2020 is looking really good in terms of planting progress in the Badger State when compared to last year.

According to the latest crop/weather report by the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, farmers were able to quickly return to the fields after three days of soaking rains earlier in the week. With nearly 60 percent of the spring tillage complete, the statewide topsoil moisture conditions were rated six percent short, 79 percent adequate and 15 percent surplus. As of Sunday, just over a third of the state's corn had been planted. That's 16 days ahead of last year and five days ahead of normal. Some reporters have even observed corn emerging in earlier planted fields.

The soybean crop is 18 days ahead of schedule at 14 percent complete. This is the largest one-week increase of soybean plantings since records began in 1980. Over half the oats have been seeded, more than two weeks ahead of last year and the five-year average. And the winter wheat crop was rated 65 percent in good to excellent condition.
