Wisconsin Farmers Make Good Progress in the Fields

Tuesday, April 28th, 2020 -- 10:26 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Farmers took advantage of last week's warm and dry weather conditions to make good progress on their spring fieldwork.

According to Monday's weekly crop report by the Wisconsin Ag Statistic Service, producers chopped the remainder of last year's standing corn, tilled fields, applied fertilizer and manure, and even planted some soybeans during the past seven days. Topsoil moisture condition were rated four percent short, 80 percent adequate and 16 percent surplus. As of Sunday, just over a third of the spring tillage was completed. That's 12 days ahead of last year and five days better than average.

About 11 percent of the corn is now planted, which is also nearly two weeks ahead of the 2019 progress. And two percent of the soybeans are now in the ground. The oat crop is progressing nicely at 37 percent seeded, with nine percent emerged. Scouts put the winter wheat at 59 percent good to excellent condition statewide.
