Easter Snowstorm Causes Delay in Fieldwork

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Last week's Easter snowstorm and the colder temperatures that followed meant more spring planting delays for state farmers. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service said on Monday's weekly crop report that daytime highs struggled to get above freezing in the northern counties, while many fields in other parts of the state were too cold and wet for planting. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated one percent short, 75 percent adequate and 24 percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 14 percent of the state's spring tillage was complete, six days ahead of last year and two days ahead of average for mid-April.
Farmers were able to start planting corn and potatoes where conditions allowed. And oat planting has now exceeded 20 percent statewide. Reporters say the winter wheat is looking nice with more than half the crop rated in good to excellent condition.
