Marshfield Man Win Unemployment Appeal After He Quit Job Because of Racial Slurs

Friday, April 17th, 2020 -- 10:19 AM

(Marshfield News Herald) -A Marshfield man has won an unemployment appeal after he quit his job because of racial slurs.

According to the Marshfield News Herald, Jason Whittlesey quit his job at the Blue Heron BrewPub after being subjected to repeated racial slurs. Originally, Wood County Judge Todd Wolff found that Whittlesey quit his job without good cause, making him ineligible for unemployment benefits. But the District 4 Court of Appeals reversed that decision and found that Whittlesey was eligible for unemployment.

Whittlesey, an African-American man, detailed several instances of co-workers calling him the N-word and expressing racially insensitive remarks. Whittlesey worked for the BrewPub from 2015 to 2017. He quit in 2017 and said the business was a hostile work environment.
