Changes to 2020 Alice in Dairyland

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The selection process for Wisconsin's 73rd Alice in Dairyland will undergo some changes in 2020 as a result of the governor's Safer at Home order.Interim Ag Secretary Randy Romanski told the media on Thursday that the state's agricultural ambassador will be chosen during a more low-key event at a time later this spring or early summer, and that current 'Alice' Abigail Martin will continue to fulfill her duties through virtual communication methods under an extended contract agreement. Romanski says the changes are being made in an effort to avoid bringing a large crowd of people together. The annual tradition, which dates back 1948, is often attended by the family of the finalists, local county organizers, program sponsors, and the media. Walworth County was originally scheduled to host this year's Alice Finals on May 14-16, but will instead bring the process to their area in 2021. Last month, the department announced that six women will compete as finalists for the title this year.
They include Rachel Gerbitz, Milton; Erica Helmer, Plymouth; Stephanie Hoff, Thorp; Kaitlin Konder, Glenwood City; Julia Nunes, Chippewa Falls; and Grace Schroeder, Cashton. It was earlier announced that the 2021 ceremony would be held in Dunn County, with Dane County hosting the program's 75th anniversary the following year. Those plans will now be re-evaluated. Alice in Dairyland is a communications professional who works to educate the public about Wisconsin agriculture. Each year, a new ambassador is chosen from a group of candidates during an extensive public job interview process.
