DATCP Says It's Business as Usual Even During Coronavirus Pandemic

Friday, April 10th, 2020 -- 9:29 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The head of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says operations at the agency are still in full swing despite the many changes brought on by the effects of the Coronavirus.

State Interim Ag Secretary Randy Romanski told members of the media during a conference call on Thursday that many staff are working remotely, but most services continue to be offered to those who need it. He said on-site meat inspections are continuing with little interruption, but many of the Division of Food inspections are being done virtually whenever possible.

As for reports about how many dairy farmers in Wisconsin are being told to dispose of their milk, Romanski said the department does not have an exact figure but is asking affected producers to report such incidents to the Wisconsin Farm Center if they feel comfortable sharing the information. The agency is also extending re-certification deadlines for pesticide handlers and offering online training to those who wish to become certified.
