(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farmers are expected to plant about 3.90 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2020, which is about 100,000 acres more land than they sowed last year. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service said in its Prospective Plantings report on Tuesday that growers also intend to plant 1.95 million acres of soybeans in the Badger State, an increase of 200,000 acres more than in 2019. If realized, this will be Wisconsin's fourth largest planted acreage on record.
Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 280,000 acres, a 35,000 acre decrease compared to last year. But oat producers are also looking to seed 280,000 acres, which is about 15,000 acres more than the previous season. About 1.35 million acres of dry hay is expected to come off the fields this year, up 50,000 acres from last year. The annual Prospective Plantings is based on the voluntary responses from approximately 2,000 Wisconsin producers.
Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers must make their final planting decisions. Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2020 is estimated at 97 million acres, up eight percent from last year.
Soybean acreage is estimated at 83.5 million acres, which would be a 10 percent bump from last year. But all wheat planted area for the year ahead will be about 44.7 million acres, which would be the lowest all wheat planted area since records began in 1919.
