CLARK COUNTY STILL LEADS THE STATE IN DAIRY HERDS

Clark County lost a few dairy herds last month, but it continues to have more herds than any other county in the state.

Overall, Wisconsin lost another 55 dairy herds during the past month. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture indicates there were 15,087 herds milking during the month of May. Compared to last year at this time, about 463 herds either sold out or merged with other operations.

Clark County continues to hold the highest number of herds in the state with 1,017 ? down from 1,021 in April.

According to the DATCP, Wisconsin's milk cow inventory, at 1.24 million head, declined 10,000 head from January 1, 2004. Nationally, Wisconsin ranked second in the number of milk cows - California has the most herds.
