Governor Evers is Joining Hmong Leaders Calling for Negotiations of Deporting Hmong Americans to Stop

Friday, February 14th, 2020 -- 12:41 PM

(WRN) -There are potential negotiations underway to start deporting Hmong Americans back to Laos, and community leaders are calling for that to stop.

As Hmong leaders and state officials scramble to decipher a possible deportation plan for Hmong Americans, community leaders are calling for clarity and calm. Wausau-based Hmong American Center director Yee Leng Xiong says that there is no home for the Hmong people in Laos any longer.

"This is our homeland now. The United States is our home."

Governor Tony Evers is joining a growing protest against a potential plan to deport Hmong Americans back to Laos. Xiong says that these plans are still just a possibility and that nothing concrete has been announced.

"They should wait for further clarification or information to come out, before making any rash judgment or decisions."

Xiong says that the Hmong populations that are in danger are the ones who helped the US fight the Vietnam War.

"They fought against Communism, they did everything they can to save American pilots, protect radio towers, and also disrupt supplies that were being transported along the Ho Chi Minh Trail."

Governor Evers sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday calling for clarification of plans and says that sending Hmong populations back to Laos, where they have no home, opens them up to human rights abuses.
