State consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin says that since the pay is pretty good this year to be a census worker, some crooks are trying to claim they can secure you a position, if you pay a fee.
"If someone reaches out to you to be a census worker, and they ask you to pay money to file an application? That is a scam."
Sutherlin says no one has to pay any fee to apply for the positions.
"So it's a great job, they're looking for people now, the hourly rate is pretty good, and if you're interested in it, we encourage you to look at 2020 Census dot gov slash jobs, and complete an online application."
Sutherlin says anyone claiming that they can get you a census job by handing over an application fee and personal information is a crook.
"Anyone asking you for money to apply for a job, you should be concerned about it as a general matter. But definitely when they say they're with the federal government, they just don't charge you to apply for jobs."
The only place to properly apply for a census worker position is online at 2020 Census dot gov slash jobs.
