Several area athletes will be competing in the Special Olympics Wisconsin Winter Games in Wausau this weekend...The Winter Games have taken place in Wausau for nearly 30 years! These games bring over 160 athletes and 80 coaches to Granite Peak at Rib Mountain State Park and Nine Mile Forest to compete in a host of winter sports including cross country skiing, snow shoe, downhill and snow boarding.
Recent Winter X Games gold medalist, Daina Shilts of Neillsville will be competing in snowboarding.
Also competing from the Neillsville area in skiing are Kolin Schmitz, Carter Urban, and Rick Langreck along with Steven Conrad from Cadott. Skiers and snowboarders compete in Intermediate Slalom, intermediate Giant Slalom, and intermediate Super G.
The snowshoers from Neillsville include Jeremiah Dayton and Gregory Schmidt along with Bo Fravert and Connor Breitung from Loyal. Snowshoers compete in the 50M, 100M and 200M race, and the 4x100M relay.
A new Unified Alpine Skiing event will debut at Granite Peak Ski Area where Special Olympics athletes will be paired with Unified partners for a competition similar to the popular X Games Unified Snowboarding. Meanwhile, at Nine Mile Forest a Unified Cross-Country Skiing Relay will similarly bring Special Olympics athletes together with Unified Partners on the same team.
