POWERLINE CONSTRUCTION DELAYED
Monday, May 23rd, 2005 -- 8:29 AM
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting construction of the controversial Arrowhead to Weston Transmission line is being delayed.American Transmission Co. and Wisconsin Public Service Corp. hoped to begin construction in August on the Wisconsin portion of the Wausau-to-Duluth power line - several months later than the company had projected late last year.
While the construction timeframe has been delayed, the companies are still facing a number of obstacles that could delay the project even more.
One hurdle to building the line is the vote by the Douglas County Board earlier this year not to permit the use of county-owned land for the project. A bill introduced this week by a Republican assemblyman would give utilities the power to use county or other public land for such projects if they have secured permits from the state Public Service Commission. That bill will be discussed during a hearing Tuesday before the Assembly Committee on Energy and Utilities.
Construction of the Wisconsin segment of the line will begin in Clark and Marathon counties.
