(WRN) -Governor Tony Evers is moving forward with his plan to create fair voting maps in Wisconsin by creating a non partisan redistricting commission.Governor Tony Evers has signed an executive order to create a brand new non partisan redistricting commission ahead of the 2020 census. Governor Evers says that gerrymandering has rendered elections somewhat useless for a large section of Wisconsin.
"When elected officials can rely on the safety of their seat rather than the quality of their work, again, something's wrong there."
Evers says most of the state is already on board with an end to gerrymandering.
"And the people of Wisconsin agree. Over 50 counties, representing 78 percent of Wisconsinites have passed resolutions around supporting non partisan redistricting."
Governor Evers says they'll be working directly with the residents of the state on maps.
"This commission will be tasked with each congressional district in Wisconsin, hearing directly from the folks that live in those districts, and drawing fair and impartial maps for the legislature to take up the following year."
Legislative Republicans have already said they intend to draw maps without the Governor's input. The Legislature will, however, need the Governor to sign off on the maps if they don't want to go to court over the districting.
