Clark County Chapter of Friends of the Black River Holds Meet and Greet with Clark County's DNR Warden

Friday, January 17th, 2020 -- 12:15 PM

-The Clark County Chapter of the Friends of the Black River held a Meet and Greet event with Clark County’s DNR Warden.

To begin the event, those present heard from both the Friends of the Black River Group in Jackson County and the Clark County Chapter regarding some of the projects and events they’ve had recently. Jackson County has a monthly event they do and they’re looking to help keep some of the creeks open that lead into the Black River including Wedges Creek. The Clark County Chapter has held 2 clean ups this past year and they will continue to do that every year. They also put in a fishing line recycling container in the Greenwood Park and are looking to put containers in at other areas of the Black River. They also had a couple members complete WAVE training, which trains people on how to keep an eye on the health of our local creeks and streams. The group then heard from Clark County’s new DNR Warden Charles Ackerman.

He lives here in Neillsville, but is originally from Ohio. He went to school at the UW-Stevens Point and was a police officer for a year before going to the DNR. He had training in several different counties before taking over here in Clark County after the previous warden was promoted. Ackerman admitted he’s spread thin sometimes as he is the only warden that covers all of Clark County and its many outdoor recreational activities including fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, boating, ATV riding and much more. Clark County is his first warden station and he officially began in October. He said starting in October threw him right into the bow and then gun hunting seasons in Clark County.

He said it definitively provided a “sink or swim” moment for him and, although there were many times he felt like he was sinking, it was a good experience overall and he now finally feels like he’s keeping his head above water. Ackerman said his goals are to be able to help everyone with whatever issue they may have and he reminds people that if you see something, say something so he can help you. Ackerman says overall he’s enjoying working in the county and when he actually gets an opportunity to enjoy Wisconsin’s outdoors himself, he likes to bow hunt.
