(WRN) -If you're planning your Spring Break, make sure you're not going to get scammed before you even start your vacation.People are already making travel plans for Spring Break, but you should be careful what you're spending your money on. State consumer protection director Lara Sutherlin says even if you're using a site like Kayak or Tripadvisor, you need to be careful with what you're doing.
"There's a lot of times when these aggregate curation sites are trying to pull up prices for you or what have you, and it is not a legitimate site, or it's not as robust as you think it is, and you could be taken advantage of."
Sutherlin says buying a trip from some random ad in your email or social media feed is probably a bad idea.
"Check cost comparisons, and airline cost sites, and make sure you're getting the best overall deal, but you know, the reality is you just got to do your homework."
Sutherlin says doing your homework also means following up after you've made a purchase.
"You should certainly confirm directly with the airline or the hotel that you've gotten a ticket or you've gotten a hotel room well before you have to leave."
She says you should always use your credit card when doing transactions like this in order to give yourself some extra protection.
