Stanley Woman Facing Charges After Stealing from Eau Claire Employer

(WQOW) -A Stanley woman faces felony charges as she's accused of embezzling from an Eau Claire business for years.According to WQOW, Karen Towberman was charged Friday in Eau Claire County Court but officers have been investigating this case for nearly five years. That is when the owner of Dean and Associates alerted police that he believed Towberman, his office manager, was embezzling from the business. According to the complaint, Towberman wrote the checks out to herself and allegedly signed them using the owner's signature stamp. When confronted by police, Towberman confessed to writing checks to herself.
She said as a single mom it was tough to make ends meet and she used the money to pay bills, insurance and groceries. Police estimate she stole roughly $35,000 from the business over a three-year span. Towberman will make her first appearance before a judge in February. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
