Black River Falls Man Charged with Starting a Fire Above a Bar

-A Black River Falls man has been charged after calling law enforcement and saying he started a fire above a bar.According to court records, 40-year-old Joseph Berg called 911 and stated he started a fire above Murphy’s Bar in Black River Falls. When the department arrived, there was smoke coming from an apartment and the door was hot to the touch. Berg had started a chair on fire and placed it against the door. He was pacing on the roof of the building when the department arrived. He told authorities he was dealing with some mental health issues.
Berg has been charged with arson of a building, 1st degree recklessly endangering safety, felony criminal damage to property and possession of THC. The damage to the building is said to be around $35,000. There were 17 people inside the building when Berg started the fire. He’s scheduled to be back in court on February 17th.
