City of Neillsville to Residents: Stop Feeding the Feral Cats
Thursday, December 12th, 2019 -- 10:39 AM
-The Neillsville City Council discussed a problem regarding feral cats at their meeting on Tuesday.According to the mayor and the Neillsville Police Department, the city is seeing an increase, and problem with, the number of feral cats wandering the streets. The situation has gotten so bad that a city resident was actually attacked by one of the feral cats and needed to go to the emergency room because of it. The mayor stated that people have also been feeding the cats. The mayor, council and police department is asking residents to NOT feed the feral cats in the community. This causes health and safety issues in the community. The council discussed possible ways to deal with the problem. There was discussion on limiting the number of cats an individual can have. However, they said that policy would be hard to enforce as most cats are kept inside homes.
The city is unable to capture the cats because they don’t have anywhere to take them. Most local animal shelters are too full to accept new cats and the police department and city would see increased costs if they have to travel with them too far. For now, the council will continue to mull ideas on how to reduce the problem, but, again, they ask residents to NOT feed the feral cats in town. They make look like they’re in distress, but they are able to withstand Wisconsin's harsh winters.
