TOWN OF HENDREN CONSIDER DETACHMENT
Friday, April 22nd, 2005 -- 11:38 AM
Upset with taxes and what they feel is a diminishing quality of education, some Town of Hendren residents are making an effort to break away from the Greenwood school district and join the Neillsville school district. The town of Hendren, which includes Willard, sits due west of the City of Greenwood.
Hendren Town Chair Ken Kirn says 32 of the 33 people that attended the Town?s annual meeting on April 12th showed support for the idea, and he notes Town of Hendren residents have voted against all of the Greenwood school referenda ? including the most recent 5-year, $500,000 revenue cap exemption referendum. While that question passed with 68-percent of the district-wide vote, it failed in Hendren with a vote of 136-90.
The very soonest the entire Town of Hendren could become a part of the Neillsville school district would be the 2006-2007 school year.
While he?s not sure if there are enough votes to make this happen, he says the group is very serious about the idea.
There will be an informational meeting on the proposal on May 2nd at 8 p.m. at the Willard Athletic Club.
