Wisconsin Farmers Still Trying to Finish the Harvest, Even With the Snow
Tuesday, December 10th, 2019 -- 8:40 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture has decided to issue another extended crop/weather report this month due to the delayed fieldwork progress.According to the summary, poor field conditions and high grain moistures continued to hamper harvest activity, while producers in the north remained buried in deep snow. Ground conditions under the snow varied from well frozen to soft mud, allowing fieldwork to progress in some areas and completely preventing work in others. Reporters noted that the remaining snow covered soybeans were unlikely to be harvested. Grain moistures have not changed since the previous week.
As of Sunday, only 74 percent of the corn for grain was harvested--24 days behind last year and an unprecedented 23 days behind the five-year average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was reported at 23 percent. In the soybean fields, about 88 percent of that crop is now complete. That is also around 23 days behind last year's progress.
