Clark County's New District Attorney Discusses Experience, Application Process, The Future and More

Monday, December 9th, 2019 -- 1:25 PM

-Last week, Governor Tony Evers announced his appointment of Melissa Inlow to serve as Clark County District Attorney.

I had a chance to speak with Melissa and she talked about her impressive background.

“I have a little over 10 years as an assistant district attorney. I have 8.5 years at the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office and then almost 2 years at the La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office. Before that, I was in private practice, doing everything from family law to estate planning and some criminal defense. I’ve also been a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard for 23 years. Approximately, 15 of that is as a JAG Officer where I do administrative law, some criminal law, estate planning and helping soldiers with legal issues.”

Governor Evers selected Melissa for the position, but only after she went through a rigorous application process.

“Governor Evers put out a request for applicants after DA Stumbris announced that she was leaving the office. And it was a pretty intense application and interview process.”

Here’s what Melissa would like the residents of Clark County to know:

“I hope to continue that legacy that DA Stumbris and now judge Lyndsey Boon-Brunette started, working for the community to keep them safe and hopefully work with law enforcement and the community to prevent re-offenses and keep the county safe."

Finally, Melissa stated that after she completes the term of former DA Kerra Stumbris, she plans to run and continue on as Clark County’s DA.

“My plan is to run in the 2020 election. Right now I am renting a property, but once I get my house fixed up and put on the market, then I’ll be looking to buy property and move into the community. Obviously you have to live in the community to be the district attorney, but I feel like Clark County can be my new home. I like the rural community. I like the close nitness of it. I’m a little bit familiar with it from my work in Jackson County. I grew up in a small town, so this just feels like a good fit for me.”

“I was pleased to learn of Melissa Inlow’s appointment as the District Attorney for Clark County,” said former Clark County DA Stumbris. “She is an experienced and dedicated prosecutor, who is well-regarded both personally and professionally. Melissa is a great fit for Clark County as a whole and will serve its citizens well as their next district attorney.” Evers’ appointment of Inlow fills the vacancy created by the resignation Stumbris on Oct. 27. Inlow will fill the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2021.
