WOLF SPOTTED IN DOWNTOWN WAUSAU
Wednesday, April 20th, 2005 -- 10:12 AM
While we're dealing with a cougar sighting here in Neillsville, Wausau residents are on-edge over something else ? a downtown wolf sighting.Jim Campbell says he saw a wolf running not ten feet past his vehicle in downtown Wausau, past the historic Grand Theater this week. The 57-year-old Campbell has been a hunter safety instructor for the past 12 years. He says it was the animal's distinctive lope that made it easy to identify it as a wolf.
Police and state Department of Natural Resources officials say the animal that dashed through town about noon was never caught and seemed to vanish as reports of its whereabouts ceased, too.
D-N-R wolf expert Adrian Wydeven (WHY-dah-vehn) says it's possible the animal was a lost or confused wolf or a dog-wolf hybrid. Wydeven says wolves are usually far more afraid of humans than the other way around.
