NEILLSVILLE K-9 OFFICER CATCHES MAN

Thursday, April 14th, 2005 -- 8:46 AM

Neillsville?s K-9 officer has been on the job since the fall of 2002, and this weekend he had another first. Ricco caught a man fleeing from authorities after an hour-long, 50-mile car chase that started in Neillsville and ended in Jackson County with the man fleeing on foot.

Police Chief Brad Lindner said the incident began at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

"Stop sticks were used to deflate the subject's tires. At which time, he bailed out of the car and started running away from the officers into a wooded area on foot," Lindner explained.

That?s when Ricco was deployed. It took about 25-yards for Ricco to catch the man.

"You never no what the subject could be armed with. The dog eliminates any threats for the officer and anyone else in the area," Lindner said. He added Ricco performed as trained, "When the dog apprehends him, he'll bite him and knock him to the ground. That's exactly what happened."

The man, 24-year-old Donald Cash of Merrillan, was arrested and is being held on a massive $50,000 cash bond on charges of fleeing and 2nd offense drunk driving.
