Hearing on Student Discipline Bill at the Capitol Tuesday
Wednesday, November 20th, 2019 -- 10:37 AM
(WRN) -Parents and disability advocates gave some emotional testimony yesterday in favor of a state senate bill to reform how students can be disciplined. The bill would put stricter guidelines on the use of restraint and seclusion in schools. That's when a student is physically held in place by staff or devices, or when they are placed into solitary holding areas away from other people. Parents testified that their disabled students had been held in place without informing parents, who only found out when they started finding bruises on their kids.
Under the new guidelines, teachers would train to use restraints or seclusion only after de-escalating an incident, the administration would have to debrief staff each time a restraint was used, parents would have to be informed of each incident, and the Department of Public Instruction would get a copy of those records as well.
