Now is the Time to Check Out Your Deer Stand if You Haven't Already

Tuesday, November 19th, 2019 -- 12:41 PM

(WRN) -If you haven't been out to check your deer stand before the opening of deer season, now's the time.

The Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to go give their hunting spot one last look over before the opening of deer season. Big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says many low lying areas across the state saw flooding heading into November.

"Hopefully some of this really cold weather we've had recently ids going to help firm some of that up and make them more accessible to hunters, but it would be a real disappointment to get to your spot on opening day and find out it's under a foot of water."

Wallenfang says you should be giving some thought to where you're actually going to be hunting.

"Know what the deer are doing, scout for your deer, but also just make sure that your stand, if you've got a permanent stand of some sort or a hanging stand, that it's safe. You know, that all the straps are all good on it."

Wallenfang says taking one last once over of your hunting area ahead of opening day is a good idea.

"Scouting for deer is a big part of the success of a good hunt, and knowing where the deer are moving, what they're feeding on, where they're feeding and bedding and things like that are all important."

Wallenfang reminds hunters to also give the area around the hunting stand a good scout, and to make sure that the deer are still going to be using the same trails and feeding areas you're used to.
