USDA Officials Still Expecting Lower Harvest for Corn and Soybeans

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019 -- 9:40 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Even after making a few adjustments from the previous month, USDA officials are still expecting a much lower harvest for Wisconsin corn and soybean farmers.

The National Ag Statistics Service's monthly Crop Production report says corn production is forecast at 463 million bushels this fall. As of November 1, experts predict that yields will average about 163 bushels per acre, unchanged from the October 1 forecast, but down nine bushels per acre from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 3.85 million acres, of which 2.84 million acres will be harvested for grain. Soybean production is forecast at 79.6 million bushels. The yield should be around 46 bushels per acre, unchanged from the October numbers, but two percent lower than last year.

Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 1.75 million acres with 1.73 million acres to be harvested. In the potato fields, farmers are anticipating a total harvest of 29 million hundredweight. That's up seven percent from last year, as the potato yield is projected to be 420 cwt. per acre, up 15 cwt. from 2018. Wisconsin potato growers expect to harvest 69,000 acres, up 2,000 acres from last year. The next corn and soybean production estimates will be published on January 10, 2020.
