(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The Wisconsin Farm Service Agency is distributing approximately $28.6 million in Conservation Reserve Program rental payments to landowners for their commitment to conservation stewardship.State FSA Director Sandy Chalmers says USDA has begun issuing 2019 CRP payments this month to support voluntary conservation efforts on private lands. Since its inception in the 1980s, CRP has built upon the voluntary participation of farmers and landowners to take sensitive land out of production and establish land cover to improve the environment. More than 22 million acres of land were enrolled in CRP across the country and payments totaled more than $1.7 billion in annual rental payments.
In Wisconsin, 14,657 landowners will receive compensation for their efforts to improve water quality, reduce soil erosion and improve wildlife habitat on over 195,000 acres enrolled in CRP throughout the state.
