(WRN) -One state legislator says she's sadly not surprised at the results of a survey on sexual assaults in the UW-System.Representative Melissa Sargent says she's among those who were assaulted during her time at UW-Madison, and that much more has to be done to break the trend.
"We all need to work together to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible, and that we don't continue with these same results year after year."
Sargent says the answer can't come from just one source, but someone's got to get the ball rolling.
"It's going to have to be a comprehensive and holistic approach. It's not one single thing that's going to solve this."
Sargent says leaders in both the legislature and the UW-System have the power to make changes, if only they can agree to do so.
"We have the ability to invest in making this a priority, rolling up our sleeves and actually doing something about it, rather than being surprised every four years when these studies are released."
She says that Wisconsin can do better, lt, and that it is everyone's responsibility to stand up for survivors of sexual assault and take meaningful steps to prevent these occurrences. Sargent was assaulted during her time at UW-Madison and she stand with those who have been harmed. She's calling on Republican leadership in the Assembly to take up legislation that will provide meaningful support to victims and work to combat sexual violence on campuses across the state and enact policies that ensure justice for survivors of sexual assault, and support those who come forward to report.
