FEINGOLD VISITS GREENWOOD
Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005 -- 10:49 AM
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold was in Greenwood Tuesday. Holding his 877th listening session, Feingold addressed a number of questions from those in attendance.Touting so-called ?Paygo? rules that he says would restore fiscal discipline by forcing congress to spend only as much as they take in, the Middleton Democrat said he hoped to restore the fiscal responsibility of the 1990?s.
"We lost on a 50-50 vote to get to get the rule back into the budget," Feingold said. Supporters of the rules may now turn to stand alone legislation.
"I am disappointed that the President and the leadership in both houses didn't want to go back to the rules that everyone agrees helped balance the budget," Feingold added.
Feingold said fiscal irresponsibility ? most notably huge tax cuts ? have put the country in-line for a fiscal crisis.
"It's not the 'American Way' to have this kind of debt. The Chinese and the Japanese are owning our debt. They have tremendous control over us. They have the notes and they call the tune."
Feingold also chimed in on the Terry Schiavo case, saying he didn?t understand why the federal government should be involved in such a personal matter.
More than one of those in attendance praised Feingold for his hard work and honesty. Feingold hasn?t ruled out a run for the presidency in 2008, though he said he isn?t thinking much about it yet
