Tuesday, October 15th, 2019 -- 8:41 AM
-The Owen City Council heard the Water Report at their meeting last week. The Director of Public Works contacted Brian Chapman-Cedar Corp regarding the Water Report his engineers are compiling. This report will give the city information as to whether they should continue to purchase their water from Withee or purchase more water from Withee. And, once they have their reservoir inspected, if costly repairs are needed, this report will be useful when deciding how to proceed. The council also heard the Treasurer’s Report and an update on the Autumnfest being held on October 19th. The council also approved the resignation of their deputy clerk and thanked her for her service. They also approved the hiring of their new public works employee. The council also approved the payment of $157,568.43 to Haas Sons, Inc for the 1st payment of the 2019 Road Project. The board also heard the Public Works Report. The crew, along with Haas, will be repairing the water leak on 5th St. A lateral leak, also on 5th St, will be repaired as well. The director has been consulting with Gary Strand, Cooper Engineering, to assist with the past-due phosphorus reports. The cost for this service is about $5,500. Once caught up, the department will be able to continue the process.
Alum, which is a needed chemical to help control the phosphorus level in the city’s water, starts to crystallize at 50 degrees. In order to keep this from happening, a circulation pump will be installed in the Alum room. This pump will keep the water from freezing and allow the Alum to be injected directly into the water. The installation of a heated building over the concrete pedestal where the water comes in between the two ponds is also being considered. This is the second injection point of the Alum. The cost of this building will be $8,500. The money for these two projects will come from the Sewer Replacement Fund account. The reconstruction of our water main under the Heartland Rail is completed. Slobodnik Gravel & Excavating submitted a bid for $2,052 to replace the culvert on Cardinal.
