(Marshfield News Herald) -The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is working with Marathon County and a local farmer to deal with the impacts of a manure spill near Colby. The spill happened on a farm northeast of Colby on Huckleberry Road and was reported on Monday, according to the DNR. The manure flowed into Elm Creek. The spill was the result of over-filling a manure storage pit on the farm, DNR hydrogeologist Matt Thompson said. Cleanup is underway by the property owner, Keith Rahm, and the DNR took water samples from the creek for testing, Thompson said.
The DNR is looking to see how the manure affected quality of the water by measuring levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and oxygen. The DNR is not aware of any private or municipal drinking water wells that were impacted by the manure spill, Thompson said. The DNR is working with the Marathon County Land and Water Conservation District to assess the impact of the spill.
