Spencer Woman Sentenced for Failing to Provide Water to Her Cows

-A Spencer woman charged for failing to provide water to her cows on a farm near Spencer was sentenced in Marathon County Court last week.According to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, at the end of April a deputy went to the farm at 847 County Highway C after the department received reports of cows bellowing as if in pain and living in a collapsed barn. When the deputy arrived, he found that nine cows had no water and they were standing in mud and feces up to their knees. When the deputy arrived the woman’s son said he was there to water the animals, but the deputy said it needs to be done daily as the animal’s troughs were dry or had a small amount of dirty water in them.
During her court appearance, Karen Welch was found guilty of, due to a no contest plea, intentionally providing inadequate habitat for an animal-sanitation. Several other charges were dismissed on the prosecutor’s motion. She was sentenced to pay a fine of $579.
