Some area dairies faired very well at the 2005 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest in Milwaukee this week. Randy Krahenbuhl, a Monticello native, who now lives in Indiana, was named the winner of the Contest in Milwaukee. His 45-pound wheel of nutty Emmenthaler Swiss was crowned the winner.Meanwhile, Wisconsin cheese companies took top honors in 17 different classes this year. From our area, North Hendren Cooperative Dairy near Willard won the Blue Veined Cheeses category; and Grassland Dairy Products of Greenwood won the salted butter category. The Dairy state also placed second in 21 classes, and had 20 third place finishes.
The contest featured over a thousand entries from 25 states.
