UW-Political Scientist Says Impeachment Proceedings Could be Risky

Thursday, September 26th, 2019 -- 9:42 AM

(WRN) -University of Wisconsin political scientist David Canon tells WKOW-TV that impeachment proceedings against the President might be a politically risky move.

"One lesson that was learned from the Clinton impeachment is that for an impeachment to be successful in terms of removing a president, you do need to have bipartisan support."

An impeachment vote may pass through the Democratically-controlled House, but Canon says it’s unlikely to get a two-thirds majority in the Senate.

"If the vote was held today, there's no way the president would be convicted to in the Senate."

But Canon says that could change.

"Maybe if there is some other damaging information information there, maybe you will start to see some Republicans starting to say 'okay, maybe we at least need to push ahead with the impeachment inquiry.'"

At issue is whether or not the President froze funds for Ukraine before asking that nation's president to investigate the son of former vice-president and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The call on July 25th came about a week after the White House stopped nearly 400-million-dollars in military aid from being sent to Ukraine.
