Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Running for Sensenbrenner's Seat
Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 -- 9:45 AM
(WRN) -State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald told WISN's Jay Weber that he is running to fill congressman Jim Sensenbrenner’s seat."I've been kind of watching and waiting for Congressman Sensenbrenner to see when he would actually think retirement was a good option for him. So as soon as I heard the news, I reached out to my wife and family members and supporters, and it didn't take long for me to say I'm in this, 100 percent."
Fitzgerald said he's got the chops to replace outgoing Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner.
"I've driven a lot of conservative policies over the last 25 years, 12 years as Majority Leader. And I'd love the opportunity to be able to go out to Washington and hopefully make that same kind of impact."
Fitzgerald is the first candidate to officially announce a run in the 5th District. Sensenbrenner is Wisconsin’s longest-serving Congressman. He’s not running again, and will leave Washington D.C. in 2021. Numerous other Republicans are eyeing the seat, including fellow state Sen. Chris Kapenga, former Gov. Scott Walker’s son Matt Walker and Matt Neumann, the son of former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann. Democrat Tom Palzewicz is also running. He lost to Sensenbrenner in the heavily Republican district in 2018, gaining just 38% of the vote.
