WWII VETERAN FINALLY LAID TO REST
Monday, March 14th, 2005 -- 8:18 AM
By Jackie Johnson, WRNAfter 32 years, a World War One veteran's remains are finally buried.
The cremated remains of Henry Howard, a WWI veteran, will be interred in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove. Andrew Schuster of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs says the VA verified Howard's military service and his Wisconsin residence. "The deceased was eligible for Wisconsin veterans burial benefits, with full military funeral honors so there will be no charge for his burial and he will be buried with full military honors."
Schuster says the Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home of Burlington contacted the VA after an exhausting search to find family of Howard, who died in 1973. Schuster says now Howard's remains will be properly laid to rest with the respect he deserves for his service to our country. "There'll be full military funeral honors, there'll be veterans there with the folding of the flag, the sounding of the taps. In this case, Mr. Howard's flag will be folded and then we will use that flag for special ceremonies that take place throughout the year at the cemetery."
Howard served in the US Army during WWI, from April 1919 through October 1920 with a discharge rank of Corporal. Schuster says, as an added bonus of the funeral, maybe a family member will come forward after hearing his name. Currently, there's only one known veteran of WWI living in Wisconsin. That's 106-year-old Arthur Fiala, who lives in a Kewaunee County nursing home.
