Marshfield Alderman Approve New Cell Phone Policy

Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 -- 9:39 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield Aldermen are banning themselves and others from having cell phones while they're conducting city business.

With Rebecca Spiros absent, the Marshfield Common Council voted 8-to-1 on Tuesday night in favor of a new policy that puts restrictions on the use of cell phones and other electronic devices during city meetings. City Administrator Steve Barg looked at policies already in place in other municipalities. Among other things, the new policy states that all cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off prior to city meetings. The new policy applies to the Common Council, and all city committees, boards and commissions, as well as any other city staff or officials that are anticipated to participate in the meeting.

Alderman Jason Zaleski voted against the cell phone ban. Also last night, Aldermen came out of their closed-session portion of the meeting, and voted 7-to-2 to direct staff to draft an offer to purchase the Baltus Express Lube property at 110 South Chestnut Avenue across from the post office in early 2020. Aldermen Ken Bargender and Peter Hendler voted "no". The offer to purchase is subject to approval by the Plan Commission, which meets next Tuesday evening, September 17th at 7:00 p.m.
