(WRN) -September is Preparedness Month in Wisconsin and "Be Prepared, Not Scared" is the advice from Andrew Beckett with Wisconsin Emergency Management. He says that includes having and practicing a plan to get out of your home if you need to.
"Whether it be a fire or flooding in the area that makes it so that you need to leave the house quickly. You need to talk about those escape routes and how you'll get out safely and where people will meet afterwards. You need to talk about those escape routes, and how you'll get out safely, and where people will meet afterwards, both at a site near the home or somewhere far away if you're forced to leave the entire area quickly."
He says it's important that family members know how to stay in touch, in the event of an emergency.
"Make sure that everybody has copies of key contact phone numbers, email addresses, whatever way that your family chooses to communicate. Make sure that everybody has that information and knows it. And make sure that they have additional contacts that they can get in touch with just in case the immediate family is not available."
