Final Meeting of Speaker's Task Force on Suicide Prevention Happening Today

Monday, September 9th, 2019 -- 8:53 AM

(WRN) -The sixth and final meeting of the Speaker's Task Force on Suicide Prevention is today in Wauwatosa and State Representative Joan Ballweg chairs the panel.

"Later in the month we're going to be some additional work in promoting suicide awareness and suicide prevention in the Capitol, because September is Suicide Awareness Month. And at that time we are going to be rolling out a number of proposals that we hope to work through the legislative session this year, and have funded."

Today's session will include QPR training, which stands for "Question, Persuade, Refer," which is considered as the "first aid" for suicide prevention.

"We're providing QPR training - Question, Persuade, Refer training at our Milwaukee meeting for those legislators. And we're also going to be having another session of this in the Capitol later this month for all legislators and legislative staff."

Ballweg said this last meeting will also look at the burden of suicide on Wisconsin.

"Our last meeting will be taking a look at the newest report on the burden of suicide in Wisconsin. We'll also be talking about QPR training, which many consider the 'first aid' for prevention."

Ballweg expects to have some specific proposals for lawmakers to consider this session. September is Suicide Awareness Month.
