90-YEAR-OLD TO SKI IN BIRKIE
Friday, February 25th, 2005 -- 9:22 AM
Cross Country skiing is a grueling sport. Imagine doing it at a competitive level when you?re 90-years-old.The American Birkebeiner?s main event is 51-kilometers long. They also have a 23-kilometer race and they?re adding a 12-kilometer race this year.
That?s prompted 90-year-old Hermann Nunnemacher of Nashotah to enter.
The world famous race between Cable and Hayward will be run tomorrow.
Nunnemacher has 13 Birkebeiners on his resume, last racing in the during the late 1980s.
And the 90-year-old is pretty cocky about his chances. When asked by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel if he was sure he could finish, he said he could ?walk on his hands and do it?.
As of Thursday, 4,253 skiers had registered for the Birkie.
