Make Sure Your Flood Insurance is Up to Date

Monday, August 26th, 2019 -- 10:36 AM

(WRN) -If you're not sure if your home or business's flood insurance is up to date, now's the time to check.

Now is the time to make sure your home and business has adequate flood insurance. And that's important because it takes 30 days for new flood insurance to go into effect. FEMA flood insurance liaison James Sink says that if your home or business are damaged by floods, it's important to report that not just to your agent, but also your local government.

"It's really important that local authorities have an understanding of any kind of flood damage that takes place in case there is some kind of a disaster declaration."

Sink says even a little bit of water in your basement can be devastating.

"It takes about one inch of water to cause 25-thousand dollars of damage. So just a little bit of water causes a lot of damage to an individual's home."

Sink says flood insurance is seperate from regular insurance, and it works differently as well.

"There is a thirty day waiting period for flood insurance policies to come into effect. So it's really important that they do it long before any flood event happens."
