POLAR BEAR PLUNGE COMING SATURDAY
Monday, February 21st, 2005 -- 2:03 PM
After last year?s ?cool? 1st annual event, the organizers of this year?s Neillsville Rotary Club Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, February 26th, are hoping for continued success.Last year, hundreds of people gathered to watch the nearly 30 brave souls who decided to fling themselves into a hole in the ice on Neillsville?s O? Neil Creek.
Organizer Steve Walter said last year?s event exceeded expectations in many ways.
"It was just an unbelievable day," Walter said, noting temperatures reached nearly 50-degrees, "We didn't know what to expect for our first year. We were hoping for 10 to 15 jumpers - we ended up with nearly 30 jumpers."
They were hoping to raise $1,500 in donations ? they actually raised over $4,000. The goal this year is a little more ambitious: $6,000.
"We have 18-inches of perfectly great ice," Walter said, "And underneath that ice, of course, is plenty of cool water."
Registration will begin at 2:30 on Saturday, February 26th. You can get pledge sheets by calling 743-7792. The plunging will begin at 3 p.m.
