Colby Man Charged for Trying to Meet Underage Girl for Sex

-A 48-year-old Colby man charged with attempting to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex appeared in Marathon County Court on Monday.According to court records, at the beginning of the month, Marcus Gates began communicating with what he thought was a 15-year-old girl online. He was actually communicating with an undercover officer. The conversation turned sexual nature and Gates made plans to meet with the girl, telling her to sneak away so they could meet. Gates was arrested last week and he claimed that his intention was to act as a big brother or mentor to the girl. He said he felt pressured to ask her about sex. Authorities stated he was told the girl was only 15.
Gates has been charged with using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and attempting to solicit a nude photo from a minor. He scheduled to be back in court next Wednesday.
