Last Week Another Good Week for Wisconsin's Crops

Tuesday, August 20th, 2019 -- 9:51 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin crop conditions continued to thrive on last week's summer heat and scattered thunderstorms.

The latest crop/weather report indicated that corn and soybeans were well into the pollination phase, though field scouts say much of the corn fields were still uneven. The small grains harvest was also in full swing, while canning vegetables were nearing completed. Topsoil moisture levels were nine percent short, 81 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus. About 84 percent of the state's corn crop was silking last week, which is 15 days behind last year and 13 days slower than the five-year average. Nearly a third of the crop has reached the dough stage, and three percent was dented.

Soybean blooming rates were two and a half week behind normal at 83 percent. But 64 percent of the beans were setting pods and 65 percent of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition. The winter wheat harvest was 86 percent complete and oats are 56 percent finished as of mid-August. Meanwhile, all but five percent of the second hay crop has been harvested, with the third cutting now over half way done. Some reporters say farmers are cutting their fourth crop in southern districts.
