Marshfield City Councl Approves Increase in Parking Penalties

Friday, August 16th, 2019 -- 9:41 AM

(Marshfield News Herald) -Residents who violate parking rules will now face a steeper penalty.

The Marshfield City Council unanimously approved Tuesday increasing penalties for parking violations. Penalties will increase from $15 to $25 for general parking violations, which includes 90-minute and three-hour parking, parking on private property and parking too close to a fire hydrant, crosswalk or intersection. Penalties for handicapped-accessible parking violations will increase from $100 to $150. Fines double if not paid within 48 hours of the citation being issued. Marshfield Police Chief Rick Gramza said the increase will make the city's penalties consistent with those recommended by the state. Fines are recommended to be set between $25 and $100 for general violations and between $150 and $300 for handicapped-accessible parking violations.

The increase will make Marshfield similar to neighboring communities, such as Wausau and Stevens Point, according to a police department memo. The department is also planning to install a new software system to track citations and payments, according to a department memo. The department currently tracks handwritten tickets manually. The program has no annual or start-up cost, but a $3 administrative fee will be taken from each citation. The department hopes to have the new software program in place and the penalties implemented by Oct. 1.
