LONGTIME NEILLSVILLE STREET CREW WORKER RETIRES
Thursday, February 17th, 2005 -- 2:08 PM
A longtime Neillsville street department foreman has wrapped up a long career.Wayne Oldham ? ?Bill? to his friends ? was honored at a retirement party on Friday night. After 41 years on the street crew, he showed up for work for the last time on February 7th.
"I always liked to go to work," Oldham admits, "The men were good to work with; the city was always good to work with."
Oldham says there have been plenty of changes over the years. It sounds like most of the changes were good for the back. For instance, there were no street sweeping machines when he started in 1964.
"One man was designated. He had a cart and went around and swept the streets by hand," Oldham remembers, "Just a regular broom and shovel."
While Oldham enjoyed his job, there were some things he could have lived without. For instance winter water line breaks. In his retirement, he plans to do some more traveling, continue his work with NASA and the DNR on a bear study that?s in progress and do more hunting.
