Mayor of Wisconsin Rapids Signs Letter Urging Senate to Take Up Gun Control Measures

Monday, August 12th, 2019 -- 7:43 AM

(WRN) -The mayor of Wisconsin Rapids joined five other mayors from Wisconsin and 200 across America in sending a letter to the US Senate to take up gun control bills.

Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Zach Vruwink is one of over two hundred mayors who have signed a letter to the Senate calling for action on gun control. Vruwink says stricter background checks and so called "red flag laws" are positive steps towards breaking the current string of deadly shooting incidents.

"This isn't a matter of prohibiting access to the purchase of firearms, but to ensure the access is provided through comprehensive background checks."

Vruwink says the wide range of people and places represented in the letter shows its urgency.

"There are no political boundaries or physical, geographic boundaries of where these traumatic events are happening."

Vruwink says this something most Americans agree with.

"Ninety-three percent of [all] Americans support requiring background checks on all gun sales, and 87% of gun owners in some of those surveys indicate that they also support background checks with the purchase of a firearm."

Five other Wisconsin mayors joined in signing the letter, including Green Bay mayor Eric Genrich, Sheboygan mayor Mike Vandersteen, Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett and Madison mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. Democratic Presidential Candidates Bill De Blasio of New York and Pete Buditich of South Bend, Indiana also signed.
