Wisconsin Cheesemakers Continue to Make the Dairy State Proud

(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) -Wisconsin lived up to its reputation for award-winning cheeses in the recent American Cheese Society competition, with the Dairy State capturing more awards than any other state or country.Wisconsin cheesemakers took home 122 prizes and swept six categories in the annual event, held last weekend in Richmond, Virginia. Klondike Cheese Co., of Monroe, won 13 awards; Deer Creek Cheese, of Sheboygan, had seven; Hook’s Cheese, of Mineral Point, seven; Maple Leaf Cheese, of Monroe, six; Emmi Roth, of Monroe, five; Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese, of Waterloo, four; Marieke Gouda Cheese, of Thorp, three; and Renard’s Cheese, of Sturgeon Bay, three.
Wisconsin makers of cheese, butter and yogurt claimed 28% of the awards, including 37 first-place ribbons. The American Cheese Society competition, not to be confused with the World Championship Cheese contest hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association, had 1,742 entries from 257 companies representing 35 states, four Canadian provinces, Mexico and Brazil.
